The Book Museum launches an exhibition “Dante's Divine Comedy” on 4 November, marking the 700th anniversary of the world poetic masterpiece created by Dante Alighieri.
"La commedia" (1307–1321), now known as the Divine Comedy, is a monumental epic work, a poetic encyclopaedia of scientific, political, moral-philosophical and theological knowledge of the Early Renaissance. It was this work that was the pinnacle of Dante's literary career. The poem consists of three parts: "Inferno", "Purgatorio", "Paradiso" and includes 100 cantos.
The exhibition "Dante's Divine Comedy" focuses on rare illustrated editions of the poem from the collections of the National Library of Belarus.
A valuable facsimile edition (1330), which accurately reproduces the first manuscript copy of the poem with coloured miniatures, is among the exhibits.
The exhibition will also feature one of the first illustrated print editions of the writing (1481), published in the poet's hometown of Florence. The engravings are based on the works of the famous Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli.
A masterpiece of 19th-century book graphics – a series of prints (1861) by the French master Gustave Doré for the first part of the poem 'Inferno' – will be on display, as well as other examples of artistic interpretations of the immortal work.
The exhibition will run at the Book Museum (room 347) until January 16, 2022.
The end date is subject to change.
The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the opening hours of the Book Museum.
Admission is by the library card or by the Social and Cultural Centre ticket.
