A book and illustration exhibition "Rebel, Provoker, Genius" dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the birth of the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) is on show in the Fine Arts Reading Room (room 306) from October 20 to November 30.

Picasso is one of the most striking and controversial figures in world painting. The renowned master's work is characterized by a prolific diversity and a constant desire to innovate. His range is striking – from images classically clear to utterly confusing, from tragic pathos to piercing sarcasm, from almost complete life-imitation to almost complete otherness, from things joyful to things full of disgust to life. At the same time, Picasso is unified in all his modifications, recognizable in pieces of a different nature, constant in his inner themes.

The display tells about the evolution of the great artist. Turning to his legacy in albums, books and visual documents, one can see the multifaceted nature of Picasso's art. Visitors will walk through a labyrinth of interwoven periods: blue, pink, classical, green, cubist, tragic, surrealist and more. In each of these periods certain philosophical and moral principles and a dialectical clash between good and evil are visible.

Pablo Picasso always wished for the victory of life and goodness. The theme of the struggle for peace is evident in his art until his last days. The exhibition contains materials about "Guernica" by Picasso and a reproduction of the drawing "Dove of Peace", which has become the emblem of the international peace movement.

The exhibition also showcases the artist's graphics, ceramics, portraits and still lives in a variety of styles. Picasso was never afraid of contradictions and misconceptions. He was a master boldly going forward and celebrating man's freedom and independence in the world.

The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the library’s opening hours.
Admission is by the library card or by the Social and Cultural Centre ticket.
