The Belarusian theatre is an old and unique phenomenon in the national art culture of our people. Belarusian stagecraft originated in the times when people started to realizes themselves in the surrounding world and perform religious rites related to the solar cycle.

There are about 30 theatres in modern Belarus, 24 of them are state-owned (including the destroyed Janka Kupala Theatre). They hold a lot of opening nights of new plays, both Belarusian and foreign. The country holds theatre festivals and contests. Belarusian theatre troupes take part in international theatre forums and go on tours.
