A thematic exhibition “Global Environment Observation: Weather, Climate, Water Resources” dedicated to the World Meteorological Day and the 70th anniversary of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is open in the Documents of International Organizations Reading Room (room 207g) from March 19 to April 20.

World Meteorological Day is celebrated annually on March 23 since 1961. The date is not random – on this day in 1950, the Convention on the foundation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) entered into force.

The World Meteorological Organization originates from the International Meteorological Organization, founded in 1873. In 1951, WMO became the United Nations specialized agency in the field of meteorology, operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences.

WMO is a reputable source of information on the state and activity of the atmosphere of Earth, its interaction with the oceans, the climate formed and the emerging distribution of water resources. 187 countries and 6 territories are members of the organization. WMO is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

WMO has played an important role in promoting safety and well-being of all humankind since its foundation. Under the WMO leadership and through its programs, national meteorological and hydrological services make a significant contribution to protecting life and property from natural disasters, protecting the environment and strengthening economic and social well-being of all sectors of society.

WMO strengthens the interaction between the national meteorological and hydrological services of its member countries and promotes the use of meteorology in agriculture, aviation, shipping, as well as in the protection of the environment, water resources and mitigation of natural disasters.

World Meteorology Day is celebrated as a reminder of the importance of conducting meteorological studies and protection of the atmosphere and hydrosphere of the planet. It shows a significant contribution of national meteorological and hydrological services to the safety and well-being of society and is celebrated by various events around the world.

Every year, WMO marks a World Meteorological Day with a specific motto, focusing on a specific and current topic. In 2020, the World Meteorological Day and World Water Day shared the theme “Climate and Water”. The motto of the Day is “Count Every Drop, Every Drop Counts”. This year, the focus is on more coordinated and sustainable climate and water management, as they are inextricably linked. Both are at the core of the global Sustainable Development Goals, climate change and disaster risk reduction.

The exhibition presents more than 70 documents in Russian and English. Among them are books, brochures, mimeographed materials and periodicals.

The exposition consists of the following thematic sections:

·        Meteorology as an Atmospheric Science
·        Modern Weather Observation Systems
·        WMO – 70 years of Service for Security and Well-Being
·        International Efforts in Monitoring and Protecting the Environment
·        Climate Change and Water Management

The exhibition is for specialists in the field of meteorology, hydrology, ecology, geophysical sciences, students and teachers, scientists, as well as everyone interested in climate change and environmental protection.
