An exhibition titled “Out of the Shadow: the unknown original of the Brest Bible” opened at the Book Museum, on October 10. The event has attracted public attention to one of the most unusual and mysterious Belarusian printed books of the 16th century.

The original from the private collection of bibliophile Sergei Putilin has been presented to the public. The book has never been exhibited before and is little known and unexplored in academic circles.

The event started with a performance "The Brest Bible" of the amateur theater "Living History" (in Belarusian: “Жывая гісторыя”).

Deputy director of the National Library of Belarus Alexander Susha gave a welcoming speech. He noted that the unique book was still in the midst of the scientific debate and had acquired many hypotheses.

This year Brest celebrates its 1000th anniversary. The publication of the Brest Bible was one of the most significant events in the history of the printed book of Brest. The original of the Brest, or Radziwill Bible, presented by the President of Belarus, was the best gift to the city. Local historian and author of many books about the history of the ancient city Valery Moroz shared his comprehension of the Brest Bible’s phenomenon.

Visitors can see and look through a facsimile edition of the famous book and compare it with the original.

We invite you to see the authentic copy of the national book artifact. The exhibition also presents a unique Belarusian and Western European publications of the 1560s.

The exhibition is part of the event cycle Touch the Brest Bible and will run at the Book Museum until November 17, 2019.
