From June 12 to July 17 in the Music and Audiovisual Documents reading room (room 305) the exhibition “Music of the Subconscious”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the world famous Russian composer and teacher Galina Ustvolskaya (1919–2006), is held.
Galina Ustvolskaya began to study music at the age of seven. In 1947 she graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory in composition class (lead by D. Shostakovich), and the doctorate after 3 years. From 1948, for several decades, she taught composition at a music school at the conservatory. In her work she was independent and extremely demanding.
The catalog of works compiled by the author is small and includes 5 symphonies, 6 sonatas and 12 preludes for piano, 3 compositions for different instrumentation, suites, “Stepan Razin's Dream”, symphonic poems “Fires in the Prairie” and octet. However, each of these works has been worn out and suffered in the depths of the inner world of a large and unique artist. The adherents of Galina Ustvolskaya in Russia and abroad consider her work as a model of spiritual independence and appreciate her music for an exceptionally high degree of tension, concentration, and passion of the statement. In 1992 G. Ustvolskaya became the winner of the Heidelberg Prize for achievements in the field of art, in 1993 she was named "Man of the Year".
The exhibition presents works by the composer, as well as sound recordings: a concerto in C minor for piano and orchestra performed by Yuri Serebryakov, a children's suite for a symphony orchestra, a sonata No. 3 for piano and an octet for different instrumentation.
The exposition is competed with books and articles about the works of Galina Ustvolskaya.
The opening hours of the exhibition corresponds to the library’s opening hours.
Entrance to the exhibition is available by the library ticket or ticket of the library's social and cultural center.
