The book exhibition "Quality education and training throughout life for all", dedicated to the International Day of Literacy, is open from  September 4 to 30 in Documents of International Organizations reading room (room 207g).

This holiday was established on October 26, 1966 at the 14th session of the General Conference of UNESCO (resolution 1.441) and it is celebrated annually on 8 September.

The idea of the proclamation of the Day was announced at the World Congress of Ministers of education on the eradication of illiteracy, held on 8-19 September 1965 in Tehran (Islamic Republic of Iran). During the Congress t was also noted that the main purpose of the holiday is to remind about the importance of literacy in the lives of people and society, and the need to strengthen efforts on it dissemination.

Literacy is one of the basic indicators of socio-cultural development of the population. Meaning of the word "literacy" changed in the frameworks of history and increasing public demands for human development: from the basic skill to read, write and count to the learning of a minimum socially necessary knowledge and skills.

Literacy is one of the key elements necessary to achieve sustainable development, it is the basic skill that allow men and women to build a life in accordance with their dreams and aspirations. In a world under constant pressure, literacy is a pledge of respect for the dignity and human rights, the foundation for learning throughout life. Literacy plays a fundamental role in creating a stable, peaceful and prosperous society.

In the 21st century, mankind has achieved impressive progress, bringing the number of literate people in the world to four billion. However, literacy for all children, youth and adults is not yet the goal, fully achieved. According to UNESCO, in spite of the increase of the level of literacy in the last 50 years, there are still 750 million illiterate adults and 250 million children who do not get basic skills. Many children, young people and adults enrolled in school or other educational programs that do not conform to the level required for them to be considered literate in today's world that is becoming more and more difficult.

International Literacy Day provides the capacity to the Government and civil society noted elevated levels of literacy in the world and to analyze the challenges facing the way of its distribution. This problem is a key component of the body in the area of sustainable development, which are contained in the agenda for the period up to 2030.

The objectives of sustainable development, adopted by world leaders in September 2015, include the task of ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.

The Literacy Day is widely celebrated in Belarus. In different cities of our country there are exhibitions, festivals, educational events, dedicated to this holiday. In our country the literacy problems have gone a long time ago: almost all adult residents know how to read and write. The data of the 2009 census allow to consider the Republic of Belarus as the country which has the total literacy level of population. The full coverage of children getting the primary and general basic education is ensured. According to the results of a study conducted by the National Statistical Committee, in 2012, in Belarus, the level of literacy of teenagers and young people aged 15-24 years was 100%.

At the exhibition it is presented about 80 documents in Russian, English and German. These are books, periodicals, mimeographed materials, brochures and booklets.

The exposition includes the following topics:

  • Literacy and education for sustainable development. Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
  • Literacy and basic education for adults. Education throughout life. Literacy Decade: Education for All.
  • International and regional cooperation in the field of education. Bologna process. International exchanges.
  • Educational system and its improvement in the Republic of Belarus.

The exhibition is aimed to specialists of the educational area, university professors and secondary schools teachers, students, and anyone interested in solving modern problems of development of education.

April 18, 2024 marks the 210th anniversary of the birth of Yevstafiy Tyshkevich, a famous archaeologist, historian, ethnographer, local historian and museologist. His research has raised whole layers of the historical past, he was one of the first Belarusian authors of local lore. To mark the anniversary of the scientist, an exhibition "Connoisseur of Belarusian Antiquities" has been organized in the Book Museum of the National Library of Belarus.

A Look into Eternity

"Soldier's Fate": on the 100th anniversary of Vasil Bykov and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the People's writer of Belarus, publicist and screenwriter Vasil Vladimirovich Bykov.
On this occasion, the National Library has prepared an anniversary exhibition "Soldier's fate", which highlights the great influence on the work of the Belarusian writer of his participation in the Great Patriotic War.
