The book and illustrative exhibition "Life for the sake of creativity", dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of the French artist Paul Gauguin, is held in the Art Documents reading room (room 306) from June 1 to June 26.

The life and creative path of Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) are connected so closely that it is impossible to talk about his works without referring to his biography. One of the greatest masters of the 19th century, which had a decisive influence on the art of the 20th century, He didn’t even think until the age of 25 about an artist career. For the sake of becoming a painter, he sacrificed his career of a successful financier and the family well-being.

Paul Gauguin has begun his career as an impressionist, but then he has been looking for new methods and tools that express the feeling of something beyond the visible. Smooth application of paint with large planes of pure color, clear lines, neat contours of the objects, that has become a characteristic feature of the artist's creative style. The exhibition represents the copies of "Fruits", "Night Café at Arles" give a clear idea of this new direction of the artist's creative search.

But the Gauguin’s talent of and uniqueness of his works have been fully revealed on the distant islands of Oceania, where he had run from Europe in the hope of finding the embodiment of his dream of the Golden Age, living in harmony with nature and people. The artist's dreams were embodied in beautiful paintings, full of sun and bright, flaming colors: "Sweet Dreams", "Tahitian Women on the Beach", "Tahitian Pastorals", "The King’s Wife". These and many other reproductions of the artist are presented at the exposition.

The colorful albums with the paintings of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism are also represented at the exhibition, as well as postcards depicting the Gauguin’s works.

The artist's epistolary and literary heritage is also exhibited: the Noa Noa autobiographical book, Before and After, letters to his wife and artists.
