The thematic exhibition "Intercultural Dialogue and Development" dedicated to the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is held in the International Organizations Documents reading room (room 207g) from May 16 to June 20.

This Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on December 20, 2002 (resolution A / RES / 57/249) and it is celebrated annually on May 21 since 2003.

Cultural diversity composes all specific qualities that different nationalities and nationalities possess. It represents a huge potential for growth, dialogue and social participation. Similar to the natural diversity, without which ecosystems can not exist, cultural diversity is the vital energy of a dynamically developing society, which is the source of new ideas, creativity, enriching various aspects of our life and bringing new opportunities. Cultures are nourishing each other and contributing to make humankind more rich and generous.

Cultural diversity is not only a guarantee of economic growth, but also it is a means for a more complete intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life. This is noted in all 7 conventions on culture issues, providing a solid foundation for the promotion of cultural diversity.

Having adopted the Agenda for Sustainable Development until 2030, the international community recognized the vital role of culture as the driving force of change and development. Achieving the 17 goals of this Agenda is not feasible without the use of the opportunities and creative potential of the cultural diversity of mankind, establishing a permanent dialogue in order to ensure the access of all members of society to the benefits of development.

In the first article of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, adopted by UNESCO in 2001, the diversity of cultures is called the common heritage of mankind, which must be recognized and protected for posterity.

The danger of a sharp reduction in the breadth of cultural diversity is very serious. Today in the era of globalization, the protection of traditions and culture is more important than ever, as customs are gradually lost, original languages are being destroyed, and some cultures are completely disappearing. Civilization influences progress and enlightenment not only positively, but also is a factor, which can provoke complete disappearance of some cultural layers.

The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development provides an opportunity to promote culture, emphasizing the importance of its diversity, promoting integration and positive changes. This Day allows us to celebrate numerous forms of culture, including material and non-material, as well as the creative industries and the diversity of cultural expressions. In addition, it gives an occasion to reflect on how the diversity of cultural expressions contributes to dialogue, mutual understanding, and the formation of social, environmental and economic factors of sustainable development.

There are more than 70 documents presented at the exhibition: books, periodicals, mimeographed materials, brochures and booklets.

The exposition includes the following thematic sections:

  • Cultural dialogue for sustainable development
  • Rapprochement of cultures and the peace-building: the culture of peace
  • Interreligious dialogue as an important component of the rapprochement of cultures
  • Protection of linguistic diversity and promotion of multilingualism
  • Protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage as a factor of the rapprochement of cultures

The exhibition will be of interesting to linguists, philologists, employees of cultural and art institutions, historians, and all those interested in the problems of the environmental protection of water resources.

The exposition is held in the International Organizations Documents reading room (room 207g).
