In 2018 – the Year of Native Land in Belarus – the National Library of Belarus looks forward to gathering digital copies of the newspaper Zvyazda for 100 years.

The first issue of the newspaper was published in Minsk, 1917. The most famous Belarusian writers such as K. Chorny, K. Krapiva, P. Trus, A. Makayonok, I. Chigrinov and others appeared on the pages of Zvyazda.

The newspaper is unique as it was one of the first periodicals to cover the most significant historical events of our Motherland: the proclamation of the BSSR, the annexation of Western Belarus to the BSSR, the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the liberation of Belarus from fascism, etc. During the Great Patriotic War, the newspaper was published underground.

The National Library of Belarus (NLB) keeps the originals of this edition from 1919 to the present. To date, more than 9 thousand issues of the newspaper (until the 1950s) have been scanned and submitted to the NLB Electronic Library.

Since December 2006, thanks to the cooperation of the National Library with the editorial staff of the newspaper Zvyazda, our users have a unique opportunity to read the electronic version of the publication before the hard copy.

Now the library is digitizing the sets of the newspaper from its stocks and is searching for digital copies of missing copies.
