"Passenger of ‘Nostromo’", a literary and art exhibition by Krzystof Ostrowski timed to the 160th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Conrad, has opened on 14 November.

"Synthesis of Arts is one of Conrad’s basic aesthetic principles. He’d been always interested in the achievements of painters and sculptors (…) the interconnections between music, painting and literature. Conrad paid great attention to the illustrations to his own novels repeatedly emphasizing that literature should ideally aspire to the plasticity of sculpture, multiple meanings and symbolism of music, image clarity", the former director general of the All-Union State Library for Foreign Literature and First Vice-President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), Catherine Génieva, writes in an article about Joseph Conrad.

This entry of the nine-volume academic publication The History of World Literature opens the book exposition, which is part of the literary and art project "Passenger of ‘Nostromo’".

The book exposition includes more than 30 editions from the collections of the National Library of Belarus, including books published in the author’s lifetime: collections and selected works, novels, short stories and other publications by Joseph Conrad in the English, Polish, German and Ukraininan languages.

Conrad’s literary debut, the novel Almayer’s Folly, is on display along with the novels The Nigger of the “Narcissus”, Lord Jim, Nostromo, Victory, the stories Heart of Darkness, Youth, Typhoon, The Duel, Freya of the Seven Isles and other works.

The publications are placed in the chronological order in which they were written.

Conrad’s best books are devoted to the sea – he was an outstanding “marine painter” in literature. However, the main artistic merit of the writer is, according to literary critics, his ability to reveal the mysterious depths of human destiny, personality and character.

The exhibition is designed for admirers of classical foreign literature.

The exhibition “Passenger from ‘Nostromo’” officially opened in the gallery “Atrium” (3rd floor) and will run until 15 January, 2018.
The ending date may be changed.
