The book and illustrations exhibition "Moments of Sports" will be opened from April 6 to May 2 in the Fine Arts reading room (room 306).

Movement, dynamics and speed always inspire the human, give him strength, instill confidence and optimism. The theme of sport, health, harmony and beauty of the human body was always present in the works of masters of different eras and styles. It was used by ancient artists and sculptors, it was sung by the artists of the Renaissance, it inspired the figures of Soviet art, as well as our contemporaries.

The exhibition presents works that embody the diversity of sport in art. There are reproductions of antique masterpieces: a unique Greek vase of the black-figure style, depicting wrestlers, the famous sculpture Discobolus by Myron, Doriphoros ("Spear-Bearer") by Polykleitos. The strength of spirit, the grandeur and amazing harmony of man and the universe are imbued with the majestic sculptures by Michelangelo, Athletes by A. Rodin.

It will be captive to see the elegant images of skating, created by P. Bruegel, H. Avercamp, K. Somov. The works by modernists (cubism, futurism, suprematism) are characterized by speed and dynamic compositions.

At the exhibition there are reproductions by Soviet artists and sculptors who turned to the theme of the sport repeatedly: paintings by A. Deyneka, Girl in a T-shirt by A. Samokhvalov, D. Zhilinsky's USSR Gymnasts, the Footballers sculpture by I. Chaikov, etc.

The visitors will be also interested in the works of Belarusian artists: sculptures by L. Pakulnitsky and S. Bondarenko, dedicated to equestrian sport, painting by V. Pasyukevich, V. Novak, T. Kondratenko, humorous compositions by V. Gubarev and S. Davidovich.

There are also articles about the embodiment of the theme of sport in cinema art. These materials are about the film Legend No. 17, dedicated to V. Kharlamov, outstanding hockey player (directed by N. Lebedev), the documentary film Maradona (directed by E. Kusturica), information about Soviet movies about sports.

The exposition also represents the books Olympism and Olympic Memoirs by the founder of the Olympic movement, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who put forward the idea of synthesis of sport and art. for the first time.

Connoisseur of Belarusian Antiquities

April 18, 2024 marks the 210th anniversary of the birth of Yevstafiy Tyshkevich, a famous archaeologist, historian, ethnographer, local historian and museologist. His research has raised whole layers of the historical past, he was one of the first Belarusian authors of local lore. To mark the anniversary of the scientist, an exhibition "Connoisseur of Belarusian Antiquities" has been organized in the Book Museum of the National Library of Belarus.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the People's writer of Belarus, publicist and screenwriter Vasil Vladimirovich Bykov.
On this occasion, the National Library has prepared an anniversary exhibition "Soldier's fate", which highlights the great influence on the work of the Belarusian writer of his participation in the Great Patriotic War.
